Three Reasons To Rent A Storage Container Versus A Self Storage Unit

by David Diaz

If you are getting ready to pack for a future move, or simply need to store an abundance of items for a period of time, you are probably putting a lot of thought into the easiest way to get this done. You may want to consider a portable storage container over a self storage unit. You may find that a storage container is more physically, financially, and emotionally friendly.

Reduces Your Physical Workout

When you have a storage container delivered, most are designed to sit flush on the ground. This level entrance allows you to load your materials directly into your container without having to worry about pushing the weight of your items up a hill. This reduces the amount of force, as well as the amount of energy, you will have to use to get your materials packed and loaded.

If you choose to rent a moving truck to take your items to your storage unit, you will have to maneuver your items up into the back of the truck and then back out once you reach your destination. Since the back bumper of most moving trucks is a little less than 3 feet above the ground, you are probably going to have to use an inclined ramp or lift to get your stuff into and out of the back of the truck. When you factor in the weight of your materials once they are loaded onto a hand truck, along with the height of your incline, many of your major muscle groups will receive a pretty substantial workout before you finish your move.

The storage container will allow you to put forth less effort, and will also help you get the job done faster.

Saves You Gas

Unless your storage unit is next door to where you live, you will probably have to load your materials into your car or truck and drive them to your unit. Even the miles involved in a short trip can quickly add up if you have to make numerous trips to get the job done. The actual costs of getting your materials to your storage container will depend on:

  • Distance to your location
  • Number of trips you make
  • The type and size of vehicle you are using to move
  • Cost of fuel, and more

You can calculate the costs by using a fuel cost calculator

When you purchase a storage container, the company will bring it to you, drop it off, and then come back and pick it up once you have it loaded. Many companies will include this initial delivery and pick up in their quoted costs. Allowing them to provide this service will save you gas as well as time.

Allows You To Take Your Time

If you are like many people who choose to take their belongings to a storage unit, you will move them one of the following ways:

  • Rent a moving truck
  • Move with the help of friends or family
  • Load them into your car or truck

Most of these efforts require that you quickly pack, load, and unload, either because you have the truck, or your help, for a limited amount of time.

When you rent a storage container, you can keep the container at your home as long as you need to. This allows you to be in full control of your move and be able to pack it over a period of time. You will have time to go through your items and reminisce on the memories that they invoke. You can do a little bit today, a little bit tomorrow, or even wait until next week if you choose to. Being able to pack your belongings over a period of time will help you to make an easier transition. This will reduce some of the stress that comes along with moving, and less stress is good for everyone involved.

Contact a local moving company, such as ABC Moving & Storage, to see if they offer storage containers.

About Me

using a storage unit to organize a hoarded household

My mother turned into a bit of a hoarder when all of us kids moved out. It has been ten years since any of us lived with her and in that time, she managed to fill three bedrooms with all sorts of things that she really didn't need. All of that stuff was keeping her from being able to house my brothers when they came into town, so I offered to help her get organized. The first thing I did was found a storage unit nearby to rent. On this blog you will find tips for using a storage unit to organize a hoarded household.
